Quality Control: Measuring the Quality of Curved Steel Parts

Being a leading custom metal fabricator, we now deal with projects that are becoming increasingly complex in size and requirements. We have been in the custom metal fabrication industry for over 50 years, our customers expect nothing but the best. A part of the process we follow at Ogis Engineering to ensure optimal quality is measuring the quality of curved steel parts, from angle rings to steel tubes.

With advanced metal fabrication machinery, we bend steel and provide curved steel sections that are usually component parts for machinery and equipment.  We manufacture any project according to the required specifications, handling a project from start to finish – from design to delivery. This includes manufacturing of angle rings, endless shaped steel tubes, bar rings and more. These could then be assembled or welded as required. We specialize in curving and bending steel as well as other metals, ensuring we the highest quality on the market, topped with great customer service, response times and delivery times, as all projects are handled through our experienced in-house team. This raises the question, how do we measure quality in curved steel parts?

We define quality as conformance to the customer’s specification and the project’s success. When we get a project on board, we look at confirming to the following:

  • Section type:  angle, channel, bar, pipe, tube, rail, etc.
  • Orientation:  bars, angles, etc.
  • Radius:  inside, outside, center-line, etc.
  • Degree of arc or arc length
  • Tangent length (if any)
  • Special specifications for off-axis, helical, multi-radius, compound bends, etc
  • Type of material:  tube. Pipe, angle bar, mild steel, stainless, aluminum, brass etc.

Our team then starts working on the project within agreed timeframes. The dimensions are usually provided by the client with tolerances, which is agreed to before the project is worked on. In some projects, some additional tolerances could be specified, including  flatness, weld quality, hole dimensions and locations, fabrication tolerances, this is in addition to surface finish, packing, coatings and other finishing specifications.

In cases where tolerances are not given, we have our own internal standards that we follow and that meets the needs of most projects we complete.

Our customer service team has a log system to record any concerns a client might have experienced in the past, to ensure we’re constantly improving our service & delivered project as well as internal tracking of our record of quality. We run reports and analyse them in order to determine the original cause of any problem so that we can eliminate it in the future.  Tracked over time, our internal process indicates improvement of our company’s quality and success in meeting our customers’ needs.
